If You Like Notes
Today I felt that I should post this. Not sure why. It's a set of notes I took today from a talk from Mark Driscoll.
Lately, i've been realizing the dichotomy of listening to Mark Driscoll and Mike Bickle as two of my major influences. To most, they are totally opposite ends of the spectrum as far as the human doctrine goes. I like being stretched by each man's downloads of info and insight.
Something I noticed while taking notes: Driscoll's and Bickle's definition of humility are so similar.
Keep in mind, this is how I take notes. A little hard to read, I know.
Mark Driscoll : Humble Pastors, 1 Peter
1 Peter 5:2
Kings: administrative, enjoys numbers, fair salaries, budget of money, love people in practical ways
-the leader with stewardship gifts
Prophets: Discernment, finding the heretics, oversight
Priests: Mercy works, serve projects
Pastors are like the Oxen: (see scripture)
-without feeding the oxen, they will plow, but shrivel and die.
-3 years ago, Mark Driscoll raised his own money.
-if a pastor is being paid by the people and they say "we pay you, you say what we want you to say," return the money. Preach HS' leading.
-greed, shameful gain...
Avg. church has 1 full-time staff.
50% has 1 full time staff.
Lust for Power
-Remember that leadership translates to servant hood
-Jesus is the head pastor - when there is an issue, go to Him!
-a pastor is not a king in a small kingdom
-"everyone needs to know who you are? you're going to be famous? that's satanic." -MD
-Some do well with sheep, not well with other shepherds.
Control vs. Influence
-Control = Fear
-Influence = Love
'being examples to the flock' (see scripture)
People give, serve, enjoy when there is influence.
Influence is far more powerful: 'being examples to the flock'
Don't live for applause, David. Some people get into ministry because they have people pleasing tendencies. If you're in leadership and your goal is popularity, peace, you will be in compromise. If people are applauding you, you are only receiving what a false prophet is receiving.
Wolves have high approval ratings.
Humility and Pride:
Satan's issue was pride.
Satan's temptation was pride.
"You can't love others until you love yourself" "You need to have self esteem" "I'm a winner" NONSENSE!
Demonic! Jesus is your self-identity. Love because you are loved! Self help? We don't help ourselves.
I have experienced this in prayer: pray intercession for others even when I can't feel it - the power of God flows through me when I choose to pray even when I am not feeling strong, or good about myself.
Customer is always right? No...
It's not self-esteem, it's Christ, it's Glory, it's Him. We need help.
Those who are younger, submit yourselves to the elders. (that's me!)
Confess pride/false humility.
Jesus is our model of humility
-He washed the feet of Judas, the thief and betrayer.
-The one proof that we did not come up with God: God is humble. We would have never created a humble God.
-To Jesus, Humility is true greatness.
Ways that MD has experienced humility:
-practicing repentance, not demanding others'
-pastors confessing sins sets up a culture of repentance
-outside accountability and inside accountability for a shepherd is needed
-humble pastors enjoy learning as much as teaching
a humble pastor will create an atmosphere of humility.
"it is uncommon for pastors to attend the conferences they host." -MD
Humility: knowing your place (Mike Bickle's "agreement with truth")
Reformed theology is not important as Jesus.
Humble pastors are fully into the fame of Jesus, not their name, ministry etc.
-they will receive grace to enjoy their work and lives.
IT'S ALL ABOUT HIM. NOT ABOUT US.
